On 2-12-10 we were the lucky recipients of ten Sidney Crosby luxery box tickets at Mellon Arena. Needless to say the evening was enjoyed immensely by all.

We all felt like celebrities for one night. You can’t put a price tag on that. It’s not possible to exactly evaluate how such an experience could change any of these youth; however, as they have all done much to earn this special privilege I think the timing was perfect. There was magic in the air to be sure.

What can you say about being in Sidney Crosby’s personal box? This was an incredible evening for each of the seven juveniles in attendance and also for the three chaperones.

The Coffee House Nation is a group of young people in recovery from addiction and on Probation. Our purpose is to provide sober fun activities and a chance to informally socialize with each other. This event was easily the highlight of the year for us.

We were given lots of snacks (chips, dips, and even cookies) and a refrigerator full of soda. We ordered Nachos and Cheese off the menu and while we paid for those ourselves- it never ran out all night long. The view from the front five seats was stunning and really the view from any seat was fantastic. These Teens were treated to an intense night of sober fun. We now have the memories to enjoy for the rest of our lives.

The Pens lost in over-time but even that could not damper our spirits; it was such a close game and we felt so very special for being allowed to sit in Crosby’s luxury box. It really is an experience just to view all the photos and decorations on the walls.

Liberty Station Halfway House joined us as they often do at Coffee House Nation events. They transported three deserving youth and also sent one staff along. I and one other Probation Officer attended with four youth from our caseloads. This kind of camaraderie helps build strong relationships that can fuel these young people’s drive to recovery from the disease of addiction.

We all felt like celebrities for one night. You can’t put a price tag on that. As one teen put it, “I just can’t imagine that I would ever sit in Crosby’s box and watch a game. It’s so unlikely that I would say it was impossible. It makes me think that if this could happen what other good things could happen in my life if I just don’t take the first one. You know, I’m starting to think just about anything is possible.”

The Coffee House Nation welcomes PO Ransom and two of her Probationees.

Thank you Tickets for Kids for creating a memorable and powerful experience for us all and especially to reward these young men’s hard work at changing their lives.

Special thanks to PSST parents Mary, Beth and Erv for making this game and the tail-gating possible. This is our third year with a 20-ticket package. A few of our people could not make it for the pre-game fun. Erv and Beth got there early and secured us a parking spot and he and Beth supplied the eats.

The seats were awesome! Upper-level but not nose-bleed. There is really not a bad seat at Heinz Stadium anyway but our seats were directly accross from the big screen. When they were in our end-zone we could see em sweating! OK, that's a small exageration but they were great seats!

This was the first steeler game for many of our teenagers. We also are lucky enough to have a few guys in thier twenties coming back to supply inspiration and leadership for our younger guys. Lots of opportunity for people to share phone numbers, hope and inspiration.

The seven-year old with the Steeler face is my grandson. It was his first game too!

Once again Tickets For Kids comes through for us by generously awarding us 8 tickets. What a game! Pittsburgh comes on strong in the third period to win big against the number one team, The Boston Bruins. While some of us were camera shy and we only had a phone camera- we managed to snap a couple shots.

Coffee House Nation meets again! Update.

Five mostly new group members met at B-Hive 14th and Carson St. on 2-21-09. All are serious about chasing recovery and are busy turning lives around. Several volunteering to speak at Fatal Awareness Conference at Robert Morris College on 4-17-09. This will be our third year providing speakers and it looks mostly a new group of speakers this year.

Our next meeting will be in one month on March 21st. We are trying to meet every two weeks but March 7th is the NA Convention in Cleveland and two of our people are attending.

Two or three are also volunteering to speak at the PSST group (9:00 AM!) on 3-21-09, the morning before our next get together at the B-hive at 1:00 PM.

We also have volunteers to be in or help with the production of two videos that Juvenile Court is planning to make soon. Keep posted for more information. Finally, we are hoping to get some Penquins Tickets from Tickets For Kids. I will be working my Juvenile Court Rep this week. Last year, we had opportunities to go to five or six games but so far this year, we have only attended one game.

We also met two weeks ago but only had to members show; however, we are ready to pump this group up now and really get things going. New cast of young members are hungry for some speaking opportunites and fun activities. I told the group yesterday that I am going to make sure the blog is kept up featuring all of our activities and plans. Call me at 412-861-6757 if you want to get involved with Coffee House Nation.

Tickets for Kids provides 13 Luxury Pirate Game seats!

These seats rocked! We had 13 out of the 15 seats of a donated Luxury Box at the Pirate Game on April 10th. None of us had ever been to a Luxury Box and some of us had never been to a Pirate Game at all. Thanks again to Tickets for Kids for helping provide our club with a spectacular activity.

We not only had this great room behind our seats with a sofa and chair and 42 inch flat screen monitor, but we had access to the upper deck. The upper deck has pool tables and table hockey at no extra charge. While playing hockey we could walk out onto the upper deck and watch the game for a while. The Pirates lost but it didn't affect the great time we had at all!

Anther Penguins night out for CHN- thanks to Tickets for Kids. It was a Tickets for Kids night at the ice rink and a nifty Penguins cap came with each ticket. This game was one of the most exciting games ever and each one of our 8 member crew was yelling, screeming and on the edge of our seats. For several of our group it was the first time that they attended a Penguins Game or had even paid attention to Hockey. Thanks also to Milano Pizza for giving us a great deal!

Of course we miss Sidney Crosby and hope for a healthy return but we have plenty of great players left on the team. We meet first for Pizzza at Milano Pizza on Fifth Ave. They give us the "college special" if we show up before 5:00 PM. It's a tremendous deal on a large pizza and a refillable picture of pop comes with each one. Thanks Milano Pizza for helping us out again.

We landed 8 tickets via Tickets For Kids. Thanks you Tickets For Kids. We couldn't do it without you. This the most impressive Penguin's Team that we have seen yet this year- these guys are winners. Speaking of winners, this was the most positive group of young people we have ever taken anyplace.

We would also like to thank Pizza Milano at 1304 Fifth Ave for the generous discount. Everyone agreed that is was excellent Pizza. Click 'read more' for more pictures.

It seems to be that EVERYONE asked so far wants to see "I AM LEGEND." So, I took down the "GOLDEN COMPASS" add.

December 26th from 1:30 to 2:00 pm meet at Caribu Coffee Shoppe attached to Joseph Beth Books near the Hot Metal St. Bridge and Carson St. We will be walking two blocks from there to South Side Works Movie Theatre to see "I AM LEGEND." It starts at 2:25 and you must make before the movie starts or you will have to buy your own ticket. You can call Kelly Tuma (412-247-6372) or Lloyd Woodward (412-861-6757) to let us know that you will be coming.

After the movie we are probably going to get something to eat.

Due to icy weather on Sunday December 16, coffee was cancelled. We have rescheduled an activity for December 26, 2007 in the afternoon. It is a Wednesday, but no one will be in school for holiday vacation. We have been given a donation by a parent from the Parent Survival Skills Training and are able to attend a matinee movie. There are two options: The Golden Compass or I Am Legend. Call Kelly at 412-247-6372 by Friday December 21 with your preference. This will determine which movie and the meeting time. We will see the movie in the South Side Works.

TICKETS FOR KIDS, you created another magical night for our club. We used the 12 tickets you gave us on October 25th, and while the Penguins disapointed, our club had a chance to see a Crosby goal, some excellent Hockey, and to get to know each other a bit. Many of us had never or hardly ever been to a hockey game! The seats were great too! I had two parents help with transporting and chaperoning the nine youth that attended.

This was the view from our seats without zoom feature! Click picture to appreciate what great seats we had. Unfortunately, Montreal was just to tough for us this time but we'll be back on November 7th for a Penguins challenge against Philly. The biggest win was for our club to share another sober-fun event of this quailty and to make some stronger relationships with each other. Recently I was out at AIU West School for a brief chat with students, many of whom make no secret that they view recreational drug use as harmless. This is a tough bunch to reach. Kids always listen to other kids much more than they listen to adults. Any help at all is appreciated.

Two teens speak at Juvenile Court Week

Three volunteers from CHN helped out during Juvenile Court Week. One helped manage the set up and two others spoke on the topic of Binge Drinking to approximately 700 school aged youth who visited Juvenile Court as a field trip. Much credit should go to these two brave teenagers...

The buzz in hallways was that our presentation was the one not to miss and these outstanding vounteers shared details of their tragic experince with alcohol to ten different courtrooms full of students.

We were under the impression that a large parcel of tickets to the Penquins Game would come to Juvenile Court and that CHN would get 12 or more of those. Sorry, Tickets for Kids has no Penquins Hockey Tickets for Juvenile Court.

CHN joins Reality Tour at the County Jail

Click candle for more information about the Reality Tour. This concept originated in Butler, Pennsylvania and is spreading to different locations.

CHN volunteered at the Reality Tour last night from 6:00 t0 9:30 PM.

This eye-opening public service includes a walk though parts of the Allegheny County Jail.

Five youth and three parents attended. At the end, two of our CHN shared about their experience with drugs and out-of-home placement. They also answered many questions from the group.

Doctor Bernacki is shown here with our club members. He and his wife manage the Pittsburgh Reality Tour.

The sights and smells of the jail make it a scary place. We see real people in the intake department waiting to be processed. Sometime the prisoners approach the glass window and bang on it demanding attention from our group walking by. Some of them look horrible, perhaps in withdrawal from drugs or alcohol- or perhaps still intoxicated.

This picture captures the hazy quality outside the jail. It is as though we are about to enter the Twilight Zone.

Our two speakers at the end. One of our speakers not only shared his painful experience with drugs, but he reached out to parents in the group- telling them that by having him arrested and sent away- his mother probably saved his life. Since his mother was in the group- she received a big ovation from the audience. After the presentation, Doctor Bernacki invited her to speak next month along with her son. She has gladly accepted the invitation.

This is a role-play about an overdose in a hospital ER. The parents flip out when they learn that their son is dead. Next, we are taken to a closed casket funeral role-play where the same parents mourn the loss of their son. Usually, inmates from the County Jail speak to the tour group at the end, but last night the speakers were from CHN. This tour does some excellent prevention and education for younger youth, especially ages 10 through 16. For more info about the Reality Tour click here

Gateway Breakfast with Legislators

Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbet served as Keynote speaker for "A Breakfast with Legislators," held Friday, September 14 from 8 a.m. -10 a.m. at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott. This is a picture of the Attorney General with four of our club.

Thanks Steelers for a memorable night!

In spite of several last minute cancellations CHN used all 20 tickets. We got together for sober-fun tailgating before the game. Thanks to one of the parents who got a spot for us early we enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers, and deserts and a little football throwing. Then we enjoyed a terric game with excellent seats. And of course, we enjoyed each other's company! More pictures of the game later!

Coffee House Nation Teen volunteers at Abraxas on 8-24-07.

This Coffee House Nation teenager accompanied me to Abraxas and helped interview four residents. He told the teens about his life since he left Abraxas in November of 2006.

Brent has turned his life around. He is very committed to his 12-step program. Brent told the teens at Abraxas that when he was sitting where they are sitting, he was not ready to change. For example , he called old friends on his home pass when he knew that was the wrong thing to do. Teens sometimes will listen to other teens who have been though it and know what they are talking about.

Brent also represents hope. He likes his life now. He likes his job. He recently got a very nice apartment. He works out. He has friends. He enjoys his 12-step activities. He has people in his life that really care about him. He tells the teens that he had no clue back then of how wonderful life could be without drugs.

Brent was also able to reconnect with staff that he had worked closely with at Abraxas. He helps the Abraxas Staff (and this Probation Officer) by coming back to Abraxas to show them that their caring and hard work paid off. He inspires the Abraxas staff to continue to give their job 100 percent effort because sometimes it matters. Sometimes people really do change their lives.

And finally, Brent was able to help himself. "If you really want to learn something, teach it to someone else." (not sure who said that- someone with wisdom no doubt ;-)

IT'S STEELER TIME!

The Steeler organization has donated 20 pre-season Steeler Tickets for this Sunday- August 26th! This happened though a new Advisory Board Member's contacts. The board hasn't even met yet and already something close to a miracle has happened! UPDATE: We have all 20 ticktes spoken for. PLAN: Meet any time after 3:00 PM outside the main gate, which is A Gate. Call Lloyd's cell at 412-861-6757. Some one will meet you there. Two of us will park at the stadium and with the help of a parent volunteer we will have hamburgers, hotdogs, fruit salad, chips, pop football and frisbee. We will gather for some light festivities before the game and maybe throw a football or frisbee.

Call Lloyd ASAP (412-861-6757) if you can go. These tickets will not last. The game is at 8:00 PM this Sunday night and we will be meeting around 7:00 PM. Not sure where we are meeting yet. Stay tuned to this blog for more information.

Four seats for A Breakfast with Legislators at the Marriott!

September 14th, a Friday, Gateway is hoasting a Breakfast with Legislators held at the Marriott (airport). It is from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. I can take three clubmembers.

It is not the kind of thing teens usually do, but then again, it is a chance to be exposed to politics, listen to our congressman, and eat breakfast at the Marrriott. I have had interest expressed by several so let me know for sure if you are in on this one by leaving a comment or by calling me at 412-861-6757.

Great workshop! For two hours DJ Zimmie and Stephen from WYEP answered questions and showed each participant how to mix two songs together! Stephen Bontrager from WYEP was a great hoast and made us feel very welcome.

WYEP is providing a great resource to the community. They have a group of teens that meet every wednesday from 3:00 to 5:00 PM in a Journalism class. Stephen offered to have any of our club members who are interested join WYEP's ongoing "FreeZone" workshops for high school students. The FreeZone workshops usually focus on journalism.

Thanks Doris and Jessica for the 12 Pirate Seats! The game was exciting (we almost won) and the fireworks were fantastic. We had all 12 seats spoken for and only one person failed to show. Sitting there with that one empty seat, I couldn't help from thinking that maybe Jessica was there with us. I know I was not the only person feeling that, but it was in a good way- not a sad way.

Also thanks to Robin E. for arranging for the dontaed Permanti Brothers meal that eight of us took advantage of before the game started. It was a perfect evening to eat dinner at a sidewalk table and then walk over to the game.

It's a disgusting scam and its' sad because it only gets worse.
There's only two outcomes: Jail or up in the Hurst.

So wheter you're hustling or buying, either way you're slowly dying. So next time you make a move, picture your mom crying.

It ain't cool, life ain't fair
but that ain't any reason to stop and not care.

It's a viscous cycle like a bad song stuck on repeat.
A mind consuming disease all it does is just eat.

last Sunday was a great meeting we had two new people too the group come and join us down at the bee hive.... Jim who is now a new group member and Ryan L. who use to be on probation since November of 2002 and now has a little over five years clean and was a great inspiration to all of us and had a lot to share. Along with then their was two of our regular group members and woody...... for those of you who missed it well probably be talking about it next week so ask some questions and well see you next week.............

We met with Doris on June 10th. She was very gracious about sharing about her loss and how Jessica felt about this group. Jessica very much looked forward to our meetings. Jessica felt that what we were doing in organizing sober fun activities was important.

Also Doris gave us 12 Tickets to the July 20th Pirate Ball game and 12 Bucs hats to put on at the game. This was a great meeting even though only two Coffee House members were present. Two parents also came. It was a nice small cozy meeting.

Of course, we would love it if more people turned out. However, we don't mandate that people come in to support our meetings and that is one way that we help insure that at any on time it is a positive peer group.

We are Planning a July 1, Sunday afternoon picinic, probably in Shenley Park. Parets welcome. Stay tuned for more details.

Vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of teenagers in America. Nearly 7,000 teens die annually in such accidents, including 214 in Pennsylvania in 2005, according to the most recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

In 2003, Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and a panel of safety experts developed Driving Skills for Life (DSFL). The program focuses on hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed management and space management -- skills necessary for safe driving and often not fully understood by new drivers. Educational information on DSFL has been provided to all area high schools and there is an exciting interactive Web site, www.drivingskillsforlife.com.

Ford Motor Company Fund, GHSA, KDKA-TV and Westfield Insurance are inviting more than 600 newly licensed Pittsburgh-area teens to attend Taking the Lead - Driving Skills for Life Summer Camp. These one-day camps will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, June 26, 27 and 28, at Consol Energy Park, Home to the Washington Wild Things in Washington, PA.
